Catharina MARTIN c1822-1895
[Eva] Catharina MARTIN is my ggg-grandmother.
She was born about 1822 and was a Catholic from Epfenbach or Spechbach, Baden, Germany. It is probable that George MARTIN’s birth and baptism, the son of Catharina and Wilhelm SCHUBART, is recorded in the Catholic registers of Spechbach as there is no Catholic church in Epfenbach.
Her parents were Franz MARTIN / MARTEN and Appolonia SANDERBECK.
After Catharina, Wilhelm and their son Georg arrived in New South Wales, they probably worked for the first two years for John PORTEUS on the Hunter River. PORTEUS was recorded as the “introducer” for these assisted immigrants. Their first child born in New South Wales was Joseph who was registered as born at Raymond Terrace in May 1854. He was followed by Catherine [Kate] in 1856 and my gg-grandmother Maria [Mary] in 1857. During these years the family were living on Jones Island, Manning River, NSW and Ghinnie Ghinnie, then Cundle Plains, Jones Island again and finally Pampoolah. William and Johanna [Hanna] were the last two children – born in 1858 and 1861 respectively.
